2 min read

The 30 Second Summary:

  • Track your spend vs rebate tiers in real time so you do not miss out on £1,000s you are already owed.

  • Rebates typically run on an annual Jan to Dec cycle so October is when panic spending usually kicks in.

  • Hit the top rebate tier with one supplier then move spend to the next supplier to maximise total rebates.

  • Avoid Rebate Prison; some suppliers offer top tier rebate only if you sign for another year.

  • Use Simply Buying to stay in control with live rebate visibility before you place the next order.

You're spending serious money with suppliers every year. If you are not tracking rebate tiers you are probably missing cash you are already owed.

Rebate tiers are simple. Spend more with a supplier and your rebate % steps up. Miss a tier by a few grand and it can wipe out months of good buying.

How rebate tiers work (in plain English)

Most rebates run on an annual Jan to Dec cycle. A typical ladder looks like this:

£0 to £50,000 spend: 1.5% rebate £50,000 to £100,000 spend: 2.5% rebate £100,000 to £200,000 spend: 4.0% rebate £200,000+ spend: 5.5% rebate

That step change matters. Spend £195,000 and you get 4% which is £7,800 back. Push just £5,000 more and you hit 5.5% which is £11,000 back.

That is £3,200 for doing almost nothing differently.

Why October turns into chaos

Without tracking you only realise where you are when time is not on your side.

October hits and you start panic buying to reach the next tier. You tie up cash in stock. You pay for urgent deliveries. You order now instead of when the job actually needs it.

Even worse you can sit at £48,000 in November thinking you are safe. Then you find out you were £2,000 short and you miss the rebate.

The smarter play: max one supplier then move on

You do not need to shove everything through one supplier.

Track spend in real time. Hit the top tier with Supplier A. Then move your next spend to Supplier B until you hit their top tier. Then do the same with Supplier C.

That is how you maximise total rebates across multiple suppliers.

Rebate Prison (the trap you want to avoid)

Rebate Prison is when a supplier says they will pay you top tier anyway. The catch is you sign up for another year on the same terms.

It sounds helpful. It is not.

You lose leverage. You cannot switch. You cannot push pricing. You are locked in.

The fix is visibility. If you can see you are £10,000 short in November you can choose to push spend or walk away. On your terms.
